Where does scihand process my data during analysis and graphing?
Where does scihand keep my data during AutoSave?
Summary
Some tools run entirely in your browser using JavaScript—such as graphic generation and descriptive statistics—meaning your data never leaves your computer. Other tools, like t-tests, ANOVA, and regressions, are powered by Python and run on our secure servers hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), located in multiple regions around the world (see which libraries and packages schihand uses here).
To better understand how your data is handled when it’s sent to our servers, let’s walk through a simple example: a test comparing two groups (the same process applies to one or more groups).
Here’s how your data is processed:
1. Initial Data Quality Check (Local)
Before any data is sent, SimpliStats performs a quality check directly in your browser. This includes verifying that the data contains only numeric values and ensuring decimal points are formatted using “.” (not “,”).
2. Data Preparation (Local)
Next, we strip out any potentially identifying information:
We also prepare the type of statistical test and any selected test options.
3. Data Transmission (To Server)
The anonymized data, along with the test type and options, is securely sent to our server through a secure and encrypted connection. No names, IDs, or labels are included.
4. Second Quality & Security Check (On Server)
Upon arrival, the data goes through another check:
5. Data Processing (On Server)
The statistical test is performed entirely in temporary memory (RAM). No data is stored on disk at any point. Once the test is complete, all raw data is immediately deleted from memory.
6. Returning the Results
The results of the analysis are sent back to your browser through a secure and encrypted connection, and then completely erased from the server. You view the results, and nothing is retained.
AutoSave stores a copy of your session in your browser’s internal storage (Google Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc). No data is shared with us. It’s important to note that if your browser’s memory or cache is cleared, the browser is closed improperly, or you’re browsing in incognito mode, you may lose all data and it won’t be possible to restore it. Additionally, while the data is stored in your browser’s internal memory, anyone with access to the computer can also access the saved information. Therefore, we recommend using AutoSave only on a trusted computer and, even with automatic saving enabled, manually saving your data whenever possible.
If you want to delete your data from the browser, each browser has its own step-by-step guide available on their official support pages:
Google Chrome: Clear cache & cookies
Mozilla Firefox: Clear cookies and site data in Firefox
Microsoft Edge: How to manage and clear your cache and cookies in Microsoft Edge
Safari (macOS): Clear your browsing data in Safari
In the AutoSave restore menu, you can also permanently delete your data by clicking the delete icon.
